Ndidi named new Super Eagles’ captain ahead AFCON 2025
Wilfred Ndidi has officially been named the new captain of the Super Eagles, BETTINGVOICE reports.
Today Friday 19 December 2025, Wilfred Ndidi has been named the new captain of the Nigerian national team after the retirement of Ekong. The 28-year-old defensive midfielder was honored and officially received the Super Eagles’ armband today a few days to the start of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The midfielder’s appointment was announced on the Super Eagles X account on today Friday 19 december.
The Besiktas super star will be counting on the support from teammates to make his leadership successful.
“I thank the entire board for finding me worthy for these tasks, I am happy for the opportunity to lead this great team to victory. And with the help of the full team I believe everything will be smooth,” Ndidi told the Super Eagles media.
“I have had conversations with a couple of the players. I want to explain to them why we are taking this approach. I also need their support as well. The staff as well, we are all in this together.
“We have conversation on the task ahead, and it is important for us to be together on the same page.”
Although many sport lovers and Nigerians were not expecting him, all see was on Victor Osimhen who showed leadership skills over the years.
